They were works of art, sought after luxuries, that conquered the hearts of persons of the world over. The first Black Forest Clocks were produced in the Triberg area in the eighteenth century. The natural sounding cuckoo call was made possible, through the use of two different bellows. During the long winter moth, the farms were snowed-in and the people put their imagination to use creating finely handcrafted cuckoo clocks of many styles with rich varied carvings.
The clocks that were made in winter, would be sold in the summer moths during long journeys throughout Europe. The clocks were secured on a frame and carried on the back.
Today the carvings and clock cabinets are still made in the traditional way by experienced masters of the handicraft. Old clocks, original drawings of the first clocks, etc. are still used and modified as patterns for new models,
But the cuckoo clock in its basic form is 200 years old and
has survived until now. The cuckoo clock symbolizes the past,
present and the future.
